Each year around Oscar time many people make a mental list of all the movies that have been nominated that they just have to see before the awards. Many people actually reach the point of renting or purchasing the movies, and then just never get around to watching them. Others just wait until the awards are over and concentrate on the big winners, or look up, and later forget about, movie schedules on their satellite TV. Whatever your individual style, Atlanta bankruptcy attorney the Oscar nominees are a great place to start when looking for what to watch tonight. These films tend to be classics, timeless, and intriguing to a wide audience. Whether planning family night, date night, taking a break from sports, plaque attack or just enjoying a quiet evening in on the couch, old Oscar nominees are a great place to start. Try some of these favorite Oscar rewinds, the nominees for ‘Best Picture’ from the year 2000.

1. Gladiator (Best Picture Winner 2000)

While on his deathbed, Emperor Marcus Aurelius of Rome names his victorious General Maximus (Russell Crowe) as his successor. When the Emperor’s power-hungry son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) learns of this perceived betrayal, Maximus and his family are ordered to be executed. Although Maximus tries to hurry back to Spain to save his wife and son from certain death, he arrives too late. In his grief he is easily captured and forced into a life of slavery. Along the way he is trained to fight as a gladiator, and is eventually sent back to Rome to ‘fight’ in a series of gladiator games held by new emperor Commodus. Upon arriving in Rome Maximus contacts Lucilla, the sister of Commodus, and a power struggle begins to form between the standing Emperor and the former General-turned HGH Energizer gladiator who truly deserves the title. As Maximus gains fame and notoriety for his skill and bravery amongst the people of Rome, the tension only mounts. Shake Weight A true delight for the eyes and ears, this beautifully shot film makes a great home-movie choice in high definition.

2. Chocolat

When Vianne Rocher and her young daughter arrive in a small village in rural France, their seemingly well-intentioned chocolate shop is met with much animosity from the townsfolk. Vianne’s audacious act of opening a sweets shop during Lent is widely frowned upon, that is until her charming disposition and tasty treats begin winning her friends. With the Mayor of the town standing firm in his conviction that she must be run out on a rail, the story takes an unexpected twist when a band of river-drifters set up residence near the village.

3. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

This magical feast for the senses follows the famous warrior Li as he seeks to recover his stolen, right to bare legs powerful, ancient sword while traversing the breathtaking landscapes of Western China. A seamless blend between humanity and magic, the story is as much a tale of love and loss as it is one of exciting roof-top Magic Mesh fighting and action sequences, not to mention an excellent choice to show off brand new HD TVs.

4. Erin Brockovich

When single mother Erin Brockovich (Julia Roberts) decides to push her way into a job at a law firm, the same law firm hamilton-locke.com that recently lost her case regarding an auto accident, not a soul takes her seriously. Ready to take matters into her own hands, Erin becomes heavily involved with a case surrounding the suspicious past of land once owned by the Pacific Gas & Electric Company. Baby Bullet Without even glancing back Erin proceeds to lead the law firm into one of the largest class action lawsuits against a multi-billion dollar corporation in United States history.

5. Traffic

This contemporary Sp-Internet-Consultancy portrayal of America’s drug war follows several intertwining vignettes through the lives of various characters touched by the drug trade. Max Burn A conservative politician battles with his own daughter’s drug addiction, DEA agents protect a witness, a wife Argan oil delves into her husband’s drug operation, and a law enforcement official in Mexico plays by his own rules in this dark, rattling tale, wrenched out of an insider’s prospective.

Look for all of these exciting movies and more in video stores, online, and on the many movie channels available on satellite TV.

It’s easy to get all the best movie choices all in one place with packages from DirectTV. Whether looking for the top Oscar picks from the past, or obscure Indy titles, Direct TV Silk n Sensepil has a movie channel for you.

Some artists, like Adele, release albums that are pure Grammy catnip thanks to instant-classic sounds that resonate with the Recording Academy’s way-back contingent. Then there’s Lady Gaga.

She’s been a bridesmaid twice for Album of the Year at the Grammys, losing out on her first two releases. But with her third bid on Sunday, for Born This Way, Gaga appears to have made the kind of career-defining, big-idea album that Grammy voters could not deny.

It had all the things the Academy loves in an Album of the Year nominee: ambition, deeply personal tracks that provide a glimpse at the artist’s psyche, bold musical explorations, strong sales and chance to prove that they’re hip enough to get what the kids are listening to. (Or, in some cases, a new album by Steely Dan.)

And, indeed, BTW did have it all, from the jackhammer electronica of “Marry the Night” to the tango-lite grooves of “Americano,” the techno attack of “Heavy Metal Lover,” hints of biography in “Hair,” the lighter-raising ballads in “Yoü and I” and “The Edge of Glory” and, of course, the title track, which served as both a dance-floor phenomenon and an empowerment anthem for the ages.

The album, one of the most anticipated of 2011, not only crashed the charts with stellar sales figures of more than one million in its first week, but it also managed to once again bend the will of the music-buying public to meet her quirky, unpredictable muse. Gaga promised her fans that she was pouring everything she had into the disc and when it arrived, complete with a series of trippy, provocative videos that also pushed the envelope, they couldn’t have asked for any more from their Mother Monster.

Frequent musical collaborator producer Fernando Garibay said the recognition from the Recording Academy was a nice cherry-topper to a year of hard, hard work. “We worked on this album for so long and it was like our baby so it was more about if the fans would love it; that was the most important thing.,” he told MTV News. “But of course, nominations, yeah, that’s cool.”

The first full-length effort from Gaga since her rise to international stardom, Born This Way allowed the singer to exorcise some demons, comment on her newfound fame and, of course, create the kind of over-the-top tracks that would lend themselves to equally eye-popping live performance.

“This album was the most personal, the amount of detail that went into this record, the amount of passion and emotion from her and the team,” Garibay said. “We all followed her lead on this, on every song … how intense every avenue of making this record was for us, protecting the record, creative, conceptually, every song was a story towards the Born This Way theme.”

The video for the title track took the Best Female Video and Best Video With a Message at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. In a year in which she kept turning heads with ever-more-insane red carpet walks, Gaga fittingly raised the bar further at the show, where she performed and accepted the Female Video Moonman as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone. In between those appearances, Gaga also managed to circle the globe with the Broadway-worthy Monster Ball Tour, on which she brought the new songs to life every night in a spectacle that was the visual equal of her studio experiments.

Though she worked with her core team, which includes Garibay, producer RedOne and DJ White Shadow, Gaga also opened the doors to collaborations with late Bruce Springsteen saxophonist Clarence Clemons and classic rock producer Robert “Mutt” Lange and Queen guitarist Brian May, who helped give “Yoü and I” its epic, AM radio majesty.

Gaga was so excited to record the album that she insisted on having a portable studio with her at all times to work on new music even as she toured the world for The Fame Monster, RedOne said. The road work paid off, as the album has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide, spinning off a bevy of hits, including the title track, “Marry the Night,” “Judas,” “Yoü and I” and “The Edge of Glory.”

And though he’s been there before, RedOne added that getting another nod for the biggest Grammy honor of all is new every time. “It’s an amazing thing to be nominated for the biggest thing in music industry,” he said. “It’s always a big honor. I get happy and I never want to get used to it.”

Mixtape Daily Main Pick
Headliner: Kirko Bangz

Representing: Houston

Mixtape: Progression 2: A Young Texas Playa

Real Spit: Kirko Bangz has been progressing quite nicely. Even before his breakout single “Drank in My Cup” began charting on the Billboard Hot 100, the Houston upstart was laying groundwork in H-Town’s mixtape scene. In 2009, he dropped the aptly titled Progression, and now, three years later, he has followed up with its sequel Progression 2: A Young Texas Playa on mixtape site Datpiff.

In this new digital era, where most rap artists occupy the same space on the Internet, it seems that where a rapper hails from has become less important. Still, Bangz clearly is looking to put on for his city.

“People were like, ‘Where you from?’ They thought I was from Cali, Atlanta, stuff like that. So really, with the mixtape and my last single ‘Drank in My Cup,’ I wanted people to know I was from H-Town,” Kirko told Mixtape Daily. “It’s real H-Town: We have stuff for the girls, of course, we got hip-hop stuff, we got storytelling stuff.”

Progression 2 starts off with “Say Hello,” an introductory freestyle over DJ Khaled and Drake’s “I’m On One.” It’s not surprising that Kirko would jump on a track Drizzy has made famous, considering he has drawn more than a few comparisons to the Toronto rapper, thanks to his penchant for both rapping and singing. While Drake is openly inspired by Houston’s screw culture, Kirko truly embodies his city’s sonic characteristics on “Drank in My Cup.” The slow-rolling, lean-inspired cut repurposes Houston’s signature underground sound for radio; it debuted at #96 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 this week.

“A lot of people kinda taking our swag too. I just wanted to bring that back and take that back from them,” Bangz said, never naming who the swagger jackers actually are.

On “Play Me,” KB takes on Drake’s “Trust Issues” and furthers the comparisons. Paul Wall reps for H-Town and shows up on “Knowmtalmbout,” and on “Trill Young N—a,” Kirk stakes his claim in the streets of his hometown.

For the most part Progression 2 keeps a consistent vibe with a number of soul-dripped, screw-inspired anthems. He does switch things up however, particularly on towards the end on the hilarious story-telling joint “Ugly Bitches” where he recalls all of his less than glamorous sexual conquests.

It’s not flawless, but over the course of 13 tracks, Kirko Bangz shows a pretty solid progression.

Joints to Check For
» “Touch the Sky.” “It was really brought to me, like, it was already on a plate; I just had to put the food on the plate. I wanted a real hip-hop type beat. A lot of people don’t know that I actually can spit a little bit, so I wanted to spit and touch on a lot of things that I thought about. Like a lot of people say a lot of stuff about me, so I touched on those things on that song and kept it real hip-hop.

» “Play Me.” “I feel like a lot of people and girls be trying to play me. I’mma playa, so I had to address that situation, like, ‘Don’t try and play me.’ ”

It’s sort of hard to figure out what Peter Berg’s angle is. The same guy who directed the original superhero flick “Hancock” also gave us the wonderful teen TV drama and movie “Friday Night Lights.” He also gave us serious thrillers like “The Kingdom.” His latest film “Battleship” — a blockbuster adaptation of the classic game — also seems at first to come out of left field, but Berg promised MTV News that his involvement in the veritable “Transformers”-meets-”Armageddon” blockbuster actually makes sense.

Turns out that this type of film has been a cause close to his heart for a while now. Even though Berg has directed a variety of movies, he’s always wanted to do one set in the ocean, and “Battleship” gave him the opportunity to do that.

“I’ve been trying to do a movie set in the water for a long time. My dad was a naval historian, he used to drag me to every Navy museum in the world, anywhere we could go,” Berg told MTV News at Toy Fair. “I’ve always wanted to do a movie about the Navy.”

But it was more than that. Berg said that he also has always wanted to do a big movie, something even bigger than “Hancock.” Berg felt that it was his time to do a summer blockbuster, and that “Battleship” was the film to do it with.

“I call these movies, they’re like kind of ‘super’ movies now and they go out all around the world. Movies like ‘Transformers,’ ‘G.I. Joe,’ ‘Battleship;’ these films have such big reach. For me it made sense,” Berg said. “Now to actually see all this kind of cross-marketing and see with the Hasbro machine kicking in, it’s kind of awesome.”

Nine films are nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards this year, begging the question: who deserved a tenth spot on that list? Oscars 2012: 10 Spot answers that question, as the MTV Movies team highlights some of 2011′s greatest films and argues why they deserved a nod as the tenth Best Picture nominee.

Let?s get this out of the way right now: Yes, ?Shame? is indeed The One With The Penis ? Michael Fassbender?s, to be precise. That said, it would be a shame (no pun intended) if that?s all this extraordinary film is remembered for. For some insight into why ?Shame? wasn?t nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, we should discuss what this movie is not:

» It?s not a family film (see above re: The One With The Penis). This movie is one hundred percent adult-oriented. There are no brave horses, charming pups or precocious kids in ?Shame.? There are only grown-ups doing very grown-up things.

» It?s not populated by likeable characters. The siblings played by Fassbender and Carey Mulligan are two seriously damaged, dysfunctional people who sometimes behave horribly to each other. No heroes or heroines, no hearts of gold ? just people in pain who are trying to get through the day.

» It?s not a period piece. ?Shame? takes place in the here (New York City) and now. The city is not romanticized or sanitized; it?s depicted as a real place where real people live in the 21st century, dealing with real issues.

» It?s not an easy film to watch. Sure, there?s a lot of flesh on display, but the sex scenes are not what you?d call ?sexy.? Fassbender?s Brandon is a sex addict. There?s no love or affection given or taken in these scenes. And there?s also some pretty gruesome, heartbreaking stuff courtesy of Mulligan?s Sissy. Fascinating and engaging, yes. Sweet and uplifting? Definitely not.

In short, “Shame” is not Oscar bait. Steve McQueen?s drama is unconventional, raw, risky and current. In an ideal cinematic universe these qualities would be recognized and rewarded. Alas, Oscar doesn?t live in that universe quite yet. Maybe one day they?ll get it right.

In the lead-up to the release of the new comedy “Wanderlust,” much has been made of Jennifer Aniston’s purported nude scene in the film. But when MTV New’s Josh Horowitz sat down with Aniston and co-star Paul Rudd for our MTV First on Wednesday, the actress waved off the scene.

“Yeah, big deal!” Aniston said, insisting that most of the talk around the scene was just sensational. “Isn’t that a good, fun headline? That’s what happens.”

“Wanderlust” ? fans can preview an exclusive clip when we launch our “First” special Wednesday at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com ? takes place at a commune, where two down-on-their-luck New Yorkers, played by Aniston and Rudd, seek refuge. And when you consider that “Wet, Hot American Summer” helmer David Wain was behind the camera, nudity may seem tame. For Aniston, the scene was just another part of the job.

“At that point, we had been shooting the movie for two months, two-and-a-half months, and the amount of things that we were asked to do that we were just like ‘All right,’” Aniston said. “At that point, that was like putting on my shoes.”

The duo share the experience of onscreen skin, a fact Aniston felt compelled to share. “You’ve shown your butt,” she said to Rudd.

“Many times,” he replied.

“And onscreen as well,” Aniston joked. “In the makeup chair, he always never had clothes on.”

“I had to get dressed for the shots,” Rudd replied. “But when we weren’t shooting, I was hanging brain, as it were.”

For Aniston, nudity has to matter for where the character is heading in the story, and a crazy, purposeless nude scene would never work. “I think it depends on what the movie is. It felt like it would be gratuitous to do that in a movie like this and it would be more distracting from the movie and what was happening to the character,” she explained. “It would all be about, ‘Oh, you’re naked, so it’s boobs onscreen,’ so it would totally lose the fun and the empowering moment [my character], Linda, was having in that scene.”

One of Aniston’s co-stars, however, does show a fair amount of skin, even if he’s wearing a prosthetic penis.

“Joe Lo Truglio, the first night he came out with his prosthetic penis, within five minutes we were all touching it,” Aniston revealed. “We were touching it, and we were examining it. It was just so interesting. It was just right there, underneath it. I think first night of shooting, I could resist, there was the beginning of many, many butt slaps.”

Catch Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston tomorrow on MTV at 7:56 p.m. ET, when they’ll debut an exclusive, never-before-seen clip from “Wanderlust.” Then head over to MTV.com for our 30-minute chat with Rudd and Aniston.

Nine films are nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards this year, begging the question: who deserved a tenth spot on that list? “Oscars 2012: 10 Spot” answers that question, as the MTV Movies team highlights some of 2011′s greatest films and argues why they deserved a nod as the tenth Best Picture nominee.

My colleagues have made wonderful cases for several other qualified Best Picture nominees this year; “50/50,” “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” and “Bridesmaids” are definitely deserving of recognition, but none of them top the cinematic achievements of the “Harry Potter” franchise, specifically “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.”

To be clear, I’m lamenting the lack of recognition for the nearly perfect eighth and final Potter film, but we Potter fans cannot deny the fact that the franchise as a whole deserved Best Picture consideration. With “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” having paved the way for fantasy films to resonate with Academy voters as well as the general public, and the fact that 10 films can be nominated, it seemed very likely that The Boy Who Lived had a chance at that nomination.

So why does “Deathly Hallows – Part 2″ deserve the 10 Spot? It is the best of the bunch, hitting all the notes that those rare four-quadrant films need to hit. There is action, romance, solid character development with emotional, sweeping arcs, a killer cast, game-changing visual effects… the list goes on.

Speaking of the killer cast, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that we will never see another franchise do what “Potter” did with its actors. Not only did the casting directors select the most perfect talent for the lengthy list of characters, they were able to keep the core cast members signed on for eight films over the course of a decade of filming! That just does NOT happen in this day and age of studios and agents wanting to make a quick buck and flash-in-the-pan fame. We got to see Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Tom Felton et al actually grow up onscreen and grow as actors. Time will tell with regard to their futures in Hollywood, but their performances in “Deathly Hallows – Part 2″ were their best work to date.

And then there’s Alan Rickman. Just thinking about J.K. Rowling’s heartbreakingly brilliant arc for Severus Snape – that flashback to Lily’s death! Woe is me re-living the heartbreak pains I suffered alongside Snape in that moving, defining moment! – almost has me tearing up at my keyboard. Rickman knew about Severus’ story long before any of us did, which makes his amazingly nuanced and controlled performance over the years (and in this film especially) that much more amazing. Severus Snape wasn’t voted the best Harry Potter character ever by our MTV readers for nothing, after all.

Finally, let’s take a moment to appreciate director David Yates, as well as all the other award-winning folks who took turns helming Potter films: Christopher Columbus, Alfonso Cuaron, and Mike Newell. Rarely do book-to-film adaptations translate so well and so successfully and each and every director who tackled a “Potter” film added something special to the franchise under their direction.

Again, when will such amazing and dramatic achievements occur again in cinema? The “Harry Potter” franchise is a perfect storm of so many elements, the proverbial lightning in a bottle that can not be duplicated. A Best Picture nomination was more than a little bit deserved.
